What is the FANF Fee?

 Reading Time: 3 minutes

The Fixed Acquirer Network Fee (FANF) is a mandatory card brand fee that Visa charges to merchant accounts for accepting Visa card payments.

The amount of Visa FANF you need to pay depends on several factors, including your merchant category code (MCC), and whether the payments you accept are primarily card-present or card-not-present payments.

You can find the FANF fee under the Visa section on your monthly credit card processing statement.

FANF Fees for Card-Present Transactions

If you have a business with physical locations that accepts payments with physical credit card terminals, your FANF fees are based on the number of locations you operate.

Also, certain MCCs are considered “high volume” card-present businesses that are required to pay higher FANF fees.

Examples of “high volume” card-present businesses are airlines (3000-3299, 4511), warehouse stores (5200), department stores (5311), grocery stores and supermarkets (5411), auto rental (3300-3499, 7512), lodging (3500-3999, 7011), and furniture stores (5712).

Here’s how much card-present businesses need to pay in FANF fees:

Locations FANF fee per location per month “High Volume” FANF fee per location per month
1 – 3 $2.00 $2.90
4 – 10 $2.90 $4.00
11 – 50 $4.00 $5.00
51 – 100 $6.00 $8.00
101 – 150 $8.00 $12.00
151 – 200 $10.00 $18.00
201 – 250 $14.00 $25.00
251 – 500 $24.00 $35.00
500 – 1,000 $32.00 $45.00
1,001 – 1,500 $40.00 $55.00
1,501 – 2,000 $50.00 $65.00
2,001 – 4,000 $60.00 $75.00
More than 4,000 $65.00 $85.00

FANF Fees for Card-Not-Present Transactions

If you have a business that accepts card-not-present transactions via mail orders or telephone orders (MOTO), Visa calculates your FANF fee by Visa transaction volume instead of the number of physical locations.

Here’s how much card-not-present businesses need to pay in FANF fees:

Monthly VISA transaction volume FANF fee per month
Less than $200.00 $0.00
$200.00 – $1,249.99 0.15%
$1,250.00 – $3,999.99 $7.00
$4,000 – $7,999.99 $9.00
$8,000 – $39,999.99 $15.00
$40,000 – $199,999.99 $45.00
$200,000.00 – $799,999.99 $160.00
$800,000.00 – $1,999,999.99 $450.00

$400,000,000.00 or more $70,000.00

FANF Fee Examples

Here’s a few examples of FANF fees calculations:

Bridal Store

Let’s consider a small, local bridal store with MCC 5621 and one physical location. They don’t accept online payments, so the only way to buy a wedding dress is inside the store using a credit card terminal.

This MCC is not considered “high volume”, so the store pays a monthly FANF fee of $2.00 based on having one location.

Construction business

A construction business that only accepts card-not-present payments and has a monthly Visa transaction volume of $50,000 pays a FANF fee of $45.00 per month, because it falls within the $40,000 – $199,999.99 bracket.

Restaurant

A business that accepts both card-present and card-not-present transactions – such as a fast food restaurant that takes delivery orders over the phone – has a FANF fee calculated using both methods.

A fast food restaurant with one location, $12,000 per month in card-present transactions, and $6,000 per month in card-not-present transactions pays a FANF fee of $2.90 for the card-present transactions and a FANF fee of $9.00 for the card-not-present transactions, totaling $11.90.

How Gravity Payments Handles FANF Fees

Gravity Payments passes on the FANF fees directly to merchant accounts, without charging a markup. You pay the FANF fees as charged by Visa, and don’t pay any extra processing fees on top of it.

Keep in mind that the FANF fee is calculated per merchant taxpayer, not per merchant account. If several taxpayers and/or merchant accounts are involved, this could be the reason why your FANF fee differs from what you were expecting.
