I originally hail from Baltimore, MD, but spent my so-called formative years in Nashville, TN, which, at the time, was way less cool than it is now. I got my undergraduate education at Syracuse University where I triple-majored in magazine journalism, history, and Italian. I studied abroad in Florence, Italy, my junior year, which was my first experience traveling to another country (let alone traveling on my own). Living in a foreign country for several months certainly helped me gain a strong sense of independence and, looking back, I think it prepared me for moving on my own (without a job) to New York City just a few months after I graduated college. I came to NYC to pursue a career in book publishing, which, thankfully, worked out as I was hired as an editorial assistant at Penguin just a few weeks after I moved. I spent the next eight and a half years at Penguin, working my way up to editor and having the privilege to edit more than seventy works of non-fiction. I realized, however, that, as much as I loved the company, I really loved working one-on-one with authors, so in the spring of 2016, I decided to strike out on my own and become a freelancer. That experience ultimately led me to Gravity, with whom I worked as a client before coming on board as a full-time team member. I currently live in Astoria, Queens (the best neighborhood in NYC; don’t let anyone tell you otherwise!) with my husband, Glenn.
My editorial background certainly has a direct relationship to my role at Gravity, but my experience working with entrepreneurs, CEOs, and other business professionals over the course of my career (I used to work for Portfolio, the business book division of Penguin and have continued to edit business books as a freelancer) has given me insight into how leaders think and what motivates them. I gained a profound appreciation for entrepreneurs as a book editor, and so I’m thrilled to not only be working for a dynamic CEO and business but also for a company that helps small business owners thrive.
